Nick took this photograph of one of the canals in Keaton Beach when we visited in September 2002. The sky on that day was unbelievably bright and clear. You can see that color plainly reflected in the water. The red roof in the background is what really sells the picture as far as I am concerned.
This photograph shows how gorgeous Keaton Beach is.
I am sure that there are places other than Florida where you find this wonderful clear light, but until I came here I never noticed it.
If you visit Keaton Beach, and you don't have a place to stay, you can do what we did and go to Perry. It's a genuine small town, the sort of small town that people from larger towns never visit and definitely should. I wish I could remember the name of the place where we had dinner because it was really good. There's not much to do in Perry in one sense, but we did go to a wonderful old-fashioned movie theater. They had ONE (1) film going---just like the theaters in my hometown when I was growing up. It was delightful. We had a great time, actually.
And the best part of Perry was that the people were so friendly. They really went out of their way to be.
Sometimes it's good to get away from the traffic, the chain restaurants, and the cookie-cutter stores and malls and spend some time noticing what the land looks like without all that. Northwest Florida is truly unspoiled BECAUSE it doesn't have the scope and glamour of the places that people flock to when they visit Florida. I love those places too---and I will be posting pictures of them---but Florida has many aspects and some of the places you wouldn't think of visiting really are wonderfully charming. One of the best things about Florida is that there is so much of it to love.
