'St Augustine Lighthouse' by Allen Whitson | Used by Permission

Allen Whitson made this magnificent photograph of the famous St. Augustine Lighthouse.  The lighthouse has a reputation for being haunted and I've seen a most intriguing documentary revealing the results of a tape that was left running there overnight.

'Pineda' by Don Jones | Brevard | Creative Commons

Photographer Don Jones, who does such amazing night shots and such evocative photos of old Florida houses, took this vintage-feeling and very painterly shot of State Road 404, the Pineda Causeway.  It's the primary access road to Patrick Air Force Base.  It made me feel very sentimental when I saw it----it's so like the postcards of Florida from the 1969's, with those pastels and all that intense green.

'Shrouded House' by Bart (Editor B) | East Coast | Creative Commons

After the brilliant color and dynamism of Miami and Key West, this is the sort of Florida scene that catches you by surprise.  You turn a corner, step out of the sun, and find yourself entranced by the strange mystique of an old house.  Here's a lovely old house painted a rosy pink which even so somehow looks melancholy, despite the brilliant, darkly shining green of the magnolia leaves (note the baby magnolia in the doorway).  Perhaps it's the water stains like tear tracks along the side---or perhaps it's the house's fortified and sealed-off (from this angle, anyway) appearance.  It's a house with its own private thoughts and secrets.

You can see why the photographer was fascinated.  "We were intrigued by this vacant and overgrown pink house on State Road 60... -- so much so that I had to go back and take pictures," he says.  I'd have done the same.  You can see that it could be made into quite a cheerful place...And sooner or later, somebody surely will.

'Train Station' by Don Jones | Melbourne | Creative Commons

This is a photograph of the train station in Melbourne, Florida ("The Harbor City") (also see this). I love the contrast between the terracotta-tinted stucco and the lighter apricot shade, and the tint of the flagstones.  The bright red stop sign in the background is a nice counterpoint to the green....

Here is a beautiful gazebo on the St. Johns River in the town of DeBary or Debary or De Barry (it seems to be spelled all different ways).  It is a small town in Volusia County, Florida, along the Atlantic Coast (see the website; read some fascinating history).

Spanish Moss by Allen Whitson | St. John's River, Central Florida | Used by Permission

I used to try so hard to get a photograph of one of these trees hung of Spanish moss, but I could never get the requisite depth and detail to convey what it's really like.  This IS a Florida tree.  This is Central Florida---not palm trees growing in sand, but trees enormous old trees hung with banners.

The photographer took this gorgeous photograph along the St. John's River, the river which runs south to north along Florida's coast.

The St. Johns River by Allen Whitson | De Bary, Florida | Used by Permission

I have posted photographs from along the St. Johns River (Wikipedia says that this is the correct spelling, which I did not know).  The river runs south to north and goes right through the center of Jacksonville.  I've posted some I made near the little town of Palatka and some wonderful "beauty shots" of the Jacksonville waterfront by other photographers.
