When I was a kid, people wore giant pieces of jewelry like this. This one reminds me of a brooch someone gave me that came from New Mexico: rough turquoise stones and rose colored beads on that heavy silver. Everyone had them---we called them "pins," not brooches---but you could only wear them on things like winter coats because they made such enormous pinholes in anything else. Mostly, once they went on to something they had to stay on it. I wonder if they will ever come back in style again. I have several vintage rhinestone pieces that belonged to my grandmother.
But this style was later, when things from the southwest were really popular even in the east: things that were simple, but in those desert colors.
